Scout spirit is the spirit that all scouts should have. It is shown by following the oath, law, motto, and slogan. When you follow all of these, you have scout spirit.
The Scout oath is an oath that scouts take at the beginning of each meeting. By taking the oath, scouts agree to follow the scout law and other basic principles. It is recited as follows:
On my honor
I will do my best
To do my duty
To God and my country
And to obey the scout law
To help other people at all times
To keep myself physically strong
Mentally Awake
And morally Straight
The Scout law is a set of 12 things for a scout to be. It goes as follows:
A scout is:
Trustworthy
Loyal
Helpful
Friendly
Courteous
Kind
Obedient
Cheerful
Thrifty
Brave
Clean
and Reverent
The outdoor code is an important set of rules (written in bold).
As an American, I will do my best
It is the duty of a scout and of an American to do their best in whatever they do.
Be clean in my outdoor manners
A scout is clean (the 11th point of the scout law).
Be careful with fire
Fire is fun, but it's not fun when the forest burns down.
Be considerate in the outdoors
Think before you act and respect wildlife and other visitors.
Be conservation minded.
Conserve the environment for future scouts to enjoy. Trash your trash, clean up after yourself, etc.
The Scout slogan - "do a good turn daily" - is a reminder to do something good for another every day.
The Scout sign is a hand gesture where three fingers are held up with the elbow bent at a right angle. It is used while reciting the scout oath/law. A leader may also hold up the sign to indicate that everyone should be quiet.
The Scout salute is used during flag ceremonies and while reciting the pledge of allegiance (only use the salute if you are in uniform, otherwise cross your right hand over your heart). It is the same as a regular salute except the pinky is bent so that it touches the thumb making it a 3-finger salute.
