Below are some things that you can do to make your cold weather camping experience fun and enjoyable!
When camping in the cold, it is extremely important to wear multiple layers of clothing to keep your body heat in. One thing to note is that wool is generally better than cotton for heat insulation. It is recommended to wear 3 layers: a coat, a sweatshirt, and a long-sleeved shirt. The sweatshirt and coat can be removed. If you get hot, remember to remove layers so that your sweat doesn't freeze.
A hat, gloves, and socks are essential for camping in the cold. Cold hands, feet, and ears are never fun. Some things to consider are hats with flaps to cover your ears and wool socks. Hats with ear-flaps help keep you warm and prevent your ears from freezing. Wool socks are nice -- at least for sleeping -- because they are able to efficiently hold heat in.
A cold weather sleeping bag is recommended. Sleeping in the cold without a warm sleeping bag is brutal.
If you use a cot on campouts, it is recommended to place an insulator such as cardboard under yourself while you sleep. This prevents any wind from blowing your body heat out from under you. If you are sleeping on the ground, then you can use a sleeping pad, cardboard, foam, or other insulator.
One genius invention that can be utilized in cold-weather camping is hot hands. They are small shake-activated packs that heat up. You can toss them in your sleeping bag, inside your gloves, or even in your shoes.
Waterproof shoes are a must for camping in the cold! Wet feet are super annoying and even dew on the ground can soak your shoes. If your shoes aren't waterproofed, toss some shoe waterproof spray on them for extra protection.
While not essential, warm liquids can make the camping experience much more enjoyable. Hot apple cider, hot cocoa, tea, the list goes on. These fluids help to warm you from the inside out.
